St. Paul’s Students Visit Fairway Medical Urgent Care & Physical Therapy to Learn about Medical Emergencies and Sports Medicine
The St. Paul’s Introduction to Athletic Training class of juniors and seniors visited Fairway Medical Urgent Care and Physical Therapy to learn basic medical techniques and emergency situation skills with a focus on Sports Medicine. In addition to seeing first hand medical application, St. Paul’s Coach Stipe wanted his students to talk to local health care professionals about their careers and the academic path that led them to their occupation.
The young men first visited the Urgent Care on Hwy 21 where Dr. Steven Deloach taught them about the types of emergencies walk in clinics are equipped to handle. After a brief tour of the clinic, Dr. Deloach performed a mock suture for the class, allowing two of the students to attempt a few stitches themselves. X-ray technician Michael Phillips and nurse practitioner Donna Turgeau also talked to the boys about their jobs and the types of emergencies they see every day.
The following day physical therapist Greg Zelden greeted the students at Fairway Medical Physical Therapy to teach them about his rehabilitation techniques and the sports medicine involvement in his job. The students, most of whom are currently athletes at St. Paul’s, enjoyed being hooked up to the Electrical Stem machine and witnessing each other perform some of Zelden’s athletic rehabilitative routines.
“We are honored to be a part of the education of these young men,” said Gary Lewis, Sports Medicine Coordinator at Fairway Medical. “It is great experience for them to get out of the classroom to talk to professionals and see real life application of what they are learning.”
